Project summary Eurostat Grant Energy 2024 In recent years the EU has developed ambitious energy policy which calls for more information on, among others, the use of biomass to produce energy products, more accurate information on household energy use and energy povertry. We intend to use these new datasources to develop statistics on three topics: 1. Feedstocks for biomass production Biomass is increasingly used to reduce the use of fossil energy. However, there are concerns about availability and sustainability, depending on the type of feedstocks used to produce energy products like biodiesel or biogas. Currently, energy statistics provides little information on the feedstocks used to produce these feedstocks. We intend to investigate the possibility to quantify these feedstocks using the EU union database on biofuels. 2. Monthly smart meter data for household energy statistics Currently the main source of the Dutch household energy statistics are annual data from grid operators. For the break down by end use a modelling approach is used. Recently, Statistics Netherlands started receiving monthly smart meter data for large number of households. We intend to use this to derive more empirical based information on energy used for space heating and to provide more break downs according various dimensions, like region, month or type of house. 3. Energy poverty and monthly data on volumes and prices Despite government support to promote energy saving energy poverty persists in household that may not have had the financial means to invest in energy-saving measures. Using monthly micro data of energy consumption and contract prices, we can monitor price-driven energy saving and identifying households facing energy poverty more accurately then at present. This project aims to ascertain the added value of monthly data and contract data at the micro level compared to the current average annual aggregated data for assessing the affordability of energy costs.
