Evaluation of a new strategy to combat malaria in Guyana’s goldsmiths

Description
Description | Despite the fall of malaria cases in the Guyanese population, pockets of pest reservoirs persist especially at the level of workers on illegal mines. The mobility of these people leads to a risk of resurgence of outbreaks of infections in the population of Guyana but also on the Plateau des Guyanes (neighbouring countries, Suriname and Brazil). Soldiers are also heavily affected by malaria during their interventions in the forest. Another problem is the use of self-medication without control which raises fear of the selection of resistant parasites. Considering these major consequences for public health in Guyana and the region, the need to ensure adequate and timely coverage of the malaria “reservoir” population has been identified to reduce its prevalence and poor self-medication practices. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The operation aims to implement an innovative strategy jointly with Brazil and Suriname for access to malaria treatment of vulnerable populations “reservoir” of malaria in Guyana and by extension to protect the population of Guyana and the Plateau des Guyanes from a possible re-increasing of malaria cases. The strategy consists of the provision of self-diagnosis and self-treatment kits for malaria with appropriate training, at the level of targeted cross-border areas. The kits are then usable by beneficiaries in the Guyanese forest, the main place of contamination, especially mining workers when they feel fever. |
