"The European Week of Sport will be organised for the first time by LOS.The government of the German-speaking Community recognizes LOS as the umbrella organisation for sports in this part of Belgium and supports it financially. LOS is honoured to organise the EWoS as their first big event. Our goal is to represent this event even more in the local media, to bring it closer to the residents and above all, to promote sport and an active lifestyle. Many sports promotors like regional governments, sports federations and associations, athletes and sports locations will be involved in the 2021 EWoS. They will help to promote the main objective in our region: get people to #BeActive and motivate them to move more regardless of their abilities, age or background. This will make the week even more known and more accessible to everyone. Even though East Belgium is a small community, sport has a long history with more than 250 sports clubs; every 4th person belongs to a club. We are afraid that the Corona pandemic and the associated ban on organised sport will result in a loss of members of up to 30%. Through the organisation of the EWoS, LOS would like to counteract this evolution by promoting the general health of the population with activities targeted on more exercise and better nutrition. We want to clarify once again the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Since 2015 the #BeActive message has been implemented and between 160 and 400 activities took place every year in East Belgium. LOS would like to build on the success of the last years, will take over some program points of the Department of Sport, but also breathe new life into the project. The whole sports program will be free of charge. Each day of this week we would like to put the emphasis on a different age category and involve different sports organisations. The EWoS is a very important project to promote the benefits of physical activities and it is even more important this year."
