Expansion of Research Space, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

Hyundai E&C makes the beginning and the end of UNISTUlsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), a university in Korea which is dedicated to research in science and technology, was named among Global Rising Stars by Nature Index, one of the world’s three most highly cited interdisciplinary science journals. Established in 2009 as a result of benchmarking global prestigious universities, UNIST is the first build-transfer-lease(BTL) project in the field of university construction successfully conducted by the Hyundai E&C-led consortium.Since its foundation, UNIST has significantly grown in a wide range of research areas: It became one of the world’s top three universities in the Lithium-ion secondary battery research field, together with MIT and Stanford University in the U.S.In a consortium with nine builders such as Hyundai Engineering, Taeyoung E&C and Kyeryong Construction Industrial, Hyundai E&C(34 percent) is in charge of the construction of 11 buildings for research, special experiments, waste treatment, power generation and community communication in the total floor area of 108,988 square meters. The project is slated to be completed at the end of August.Turing UNIST into a more research-centered facilityThe research building utilized the podium structure to link the lower levels of three buildings of 12 floors above ground and 2 basement levels. It was designed as an open building architecture to provide a space where researchers from a wide range of academic fields such as chemistry, new materials and physics and astronomy are able to conduct interdisciplinary research in groups. Also world-class convergence research facilities such as a 2,000-square meter-area clean room and a large video conference room are on the way. In addition, a variety of facilities will be constructed such as a hazardous material storage room, a special experiment room equipped with an abutment test wall and a reaction floor, a power plant aimed to supply electricity for the entire campus and a waste water treatment facility.[ Clean room ]A striking example of successful BTL projectsAs for BTL projects, it is not easy to mediate differences of opinions since many subcontractors are involved. As a primary builder in the country, we have been leading the UNIST project in a successful way by exercising outstanding leadership in every moment of crisis.UNIST boasts of the country’s best research infrastructure built within a short period of time. Behind the success is Hyundai E&C which has contributed to the construction of the university from the beginning. We look forward to UNIST built based on effort and passion of a myriad of its staff developing into the Korea’s best and a global leading research institute in the near future.
