Description
Description | The lack of qualified engineers is one of the main obstacles to the development of Namibia's transport system and infrastructure. The establishment of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on the new José Eduardo dos Santos Campus of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FoE) of the University of Namibia (UNAM) in Ongwediva, supported by the first project (BMZ No. 2010 67 149), significantly expands the university's capacity for urgently needed engineers. The target group of the project are secondary school graduates, particularly in northern Namibia and from neighboring SADC countries, as well as teachers from the engineering faculty. The new department will train engineers in the transport sector in particular, but will also improve learning conditions at the university as a whole. The campus in Ongwediva is clearly undersupplied with other infrastructure. In order to improve the conditions for studying, the project is supporting the construction of an additional student residence and a cafeteria on campus with EUR 5.0 million. The total cost of the construction project is EUR 5.7 million. The project will therefore make a significant contribution to the urgently needed supply of qualified civil engineers in Namibia, strengthen the performance of the Namibian partner institutions and promote the economic and social development of Namibia. The project will also create the conditions for reducing the regional disparities within Namibia between the central region in Windhoek and the northern parts of the country and for promoting integration in southern Africa. |
