Exploration Drilling for New Railway Tunnel

ÖBB will start exploration drilling in the spring of 2023 to advance the planning stage for a new 1.6-kilometre cross-border railway tunnel from Schaftenau to the Bavarian Inn Valley. The Austrian operator will deploy four drilling rigs that will extract 1,600 drill cores across 21 locations. The drills will reach between 30 and 370 metres deep. The drill cores will then be sent to laboratories for soil analysis. The campaign will be coordinated with geological investigations by Deutsche Bahn in the Kiefersfelden area. There, ÖBB will begin geophysical investigations in the fall to complement the exploration drilling. As these investigations will happen on private property, the Austrian operator has secured agreements with the owners. The planned cross-border railway tunnel is part of an expansion project for the Scandinavian-Mediterranean core network corridor in Tyrol.
