Extended use of transaction data

Statistics Sweden obtains a large amount of transaction data from various companies within typical retail trade. So far, the main purpose has been to use each data source in a concentrated part of the COICOP structure in which the retailer mainly belongs. However, many of the continuously obtained data sources contain transactions on several parts of the COICOP structure that have so far not been used to any broader extent. In recent years, new transaction data has been obtained from several companies belonging to retailers within furniture, retail variety and home construction. Some of these companies have large assortments and non-ignorable revenue share within e.g. daily goods (food and sweets), restaurant services, clothing, household appliances etc. However, these types of products belong to areas of the COICOP structure for which the current production process (in the consumer prices section) has been well-adapted to previous data sources. Currently, the statistics production is limited to the designated data sources within the areas, respectively. For instance; a) the data sources for food and non-alcoholic beverages are exclusively transaction data from the big daily necessity chains; b) clothing and footwear use manual internet collection of prices and characteristics and an involved process for quality adjustments with hedonic regression models with pre-selected features; c) household appliances also utilize transaction data, web scraped / API data and list prices from the major chains in home electronics, to which an extensive production process for product replacements and quality adjustments is in use. Statistics Sweden has received additional government funds in order to develop new production systems as of 2025 and the following year. It is therefore relevant to enable the incorporation of additional transaction data by developing a clear pathway through e.g. guidelines for the implementation of new transaction data in a way that is well suited
