Extra EU classes in primary schools

In 2014 the government in Denmark change the school systemet, which gave different possibilities. At our school we have focused very much on the language classes, so our students can expand their opportunities in French, German and English, where they are offered the possibility to take DELF, Goethe and Cambridge courses. As a part of the 2014 reform the primary public schools in Denmark, where also given the opportunity to invent and describe their own voluntary subjects for students in grade 7-9 (14-16 years of age). This is our focus in the application. We want to invent and describe a new EU-subject for our oldest students. The class should be offered to interested students from grade 7-9. The subject will be focused on European history and EU-history as well as broader introduction to EU and its institutions. We are gonna try and connects the new subject to present subjects of French, German, Social science and History. This way of teaching EU as a subject in it´s own is new in a primary school-context. At the present EU is taught as a minor part of history and social science. In both subjects EU is subject that fills perhaps 10 % of the curriculum in the oldest grades. By teaching EU as a subject on its own, we are hoping to give room for both learning of facts as well as giving room for ethical and political discussions about EU in both its present and future state.
