Description

Description

The project involves preparing the Fairmount Line for the introduction of battery-electric trains, following the MBTA Board’s July 2024 approval to electrify the corridor. A major component of this effort is replacing the existing rail infrastructure, which serves as the first step toward accommodating the new hybrid battery-powered fleet. The MBTA expects these trains to deliver faster, quieter and more dependable service while significantly reducing air pollution in the environmental-justice communities along the line. Riders will also benefit from a more comfortable, modern travel experience, including smoother rides, reduced vibration and expanded interior space. The new trains will operate using hybrid technology, drawing power from onboard batteries that recharge when overhead catenary is available.
