Description

Description

The FC program "Reproductive Health including HIV Prevention Phase V" is the follow-up phase of a FC-financed series of projects that has been carried out in Niger since 2003. With a per capita income of USD 365 in 2010, Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. With a growth rate of 3.5% per year, the Niger population is the fastest growing in the world. With an average of almost 8 births per woman and a high incidence of pregnancy-related complications, family planning is a key issue for Niger's health policy. Despite a stable HIV prevalence of 0.7%, the risk of the epidemic spreading is significantly higher (approx. 36%), particularly in densely populated areas and in the border regions in the south, as well as among people with an increased risk of infection (prostitutes, long-distance truck drivers). The overarching development policy objective of the FC measure is to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of the Nigerien population by reducing sexually transmitted infections, particularly HIV, preventing unplanned pregnancies and increasing birth intervals. The HIV component of the programme is aimed at target groups such as truck drivers and prostitutes, but also at the general population of reproductive age.
