Description
Description | Years of armed conflict have caused the poverty rate in the formerly prosperous Côte d'Ivoire to rise sharply from 10% (1985) to over 50% (2010). The national health system is also very weak, for example complications during pregnancy and childbirth are still the most common cause of death among women between the ages of 15 and 49. The often short intervals between births and the often high number of births have a direct impact on the health of mothers. There is also a high unmet need for family planning. Poor health among mothers also translates directly into high child mortality, because if the mother dies or becomes ill, her children's chances of survival are significantly reduced. The country also faces challenges with regard to the HIV problem - here the HIV prevalence is significantly higher than the regional average, especially in urban areas and among women. The aim of the project is to contribute to improving the health of the Ivorian population. This is achieved primarily by preventing unwanted pregnancies and increasing the intervals between births, as well as by reducing sexually transmitted infections, particularly HIV/AIDS. The FC measure is intended to contribute to changes in the sense of more responsible behavior among the target groups in the area of sexual and reproductive health. The program focuses on self-determined family planning. The program components include awareness-raising and educational measures as well as the sale of subsidized reproductive health products and condoms. To increase the effectiveness of the program, the intrauterine device will be made available as an additional contraceptive in Phase IV via the newly introduced social franchising component. The target group of the project is the sexually active population, with a focus on young people between 15 and 24 years of age, especially young women. The financing volume of Phase IV amounts to EUR 12 million - plus the proceeds from the sale of contraceptives. |
