It was built to divert water to the Bhagirathi River via a 40-kilometre link canal to keep Kolkata Port functional. Since its operation began in 1975, the barrage has obstructed the natural flow of the Ganges downstream, significantly reducing the flow of the River Padma in Bangladesh, causing ecological and humanitarian issues including water scarcity, river shrinkage, and increased salinity. |
