Project
Conceptual Design Completed

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems has completed the conceptual design phase for a new helium gas-cooled fast modular reactor (FMR) designed to generate 44 MW of electricity. The reactor uses silicon carbide-wrapped high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel capable of withstanding high temperatures. The design includes modular factory manufacturing and on-site assembly with an air-cooling

Description

Description

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems has completed the conceptual design phase for a new helium gas-cooled fast modular reactor (FMR) designed to generate 44 MW of electricity. The reactor uses silicon carbide-wrapped high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel capable of withstanding high temperatures. The design includes modular factory manufacturing and on-site assembly with an air-cooling system, allowing deployment in arid or remote locations without water sources. Prototype fuel rods are undergoing irradiation testing, and licensing documents have been submitted to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The project is supported by the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program and aims for a technology demonstration in the 2030s.
