Description | California Attorney General Rob Bonta is challenging the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's federal takeover of two onshore oil pipelines that start in Santa Barbara County and end in Kern County. The state argues that these pipelines are solely located in California and should be under state jurisdiction, not federal. The pipelines were reclassified as interstate, which California claims unlawfully federalizes them and usurps state control. The legal challenge was filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on January 23, 2026. |
