Fehmarn Belt Innovation is, as the name says – first and foremost an innovation project. But it is also a collaborative project and a network project. The project is important to strengthen innovation in the companies in our part of Interreg 6A geography – i.e. on Zealand/Islands as well as in the eastern part of Schleswig Holstein. We have made every effort to find some professional areas that are important both on the Danish and German sides of the Fehmarn Belt, and we have come to the conclusion that we will work in 3 areas 1) Construction 2) Food/Bioproduction and 3) the maritime/marine area. The project’s partners will bring together a total of 30 companies and 170 students from both sides of the border, each within their academic fields, and to carry out well-designed innovation pathways. The aim is to refine and develop already existing technologies and solutions to common challenges. It can be anything from improving the management of underwater drones (which can be used for off-shore constructions such as offshore wind farms) or it may be an improved method to retrieve proteins from seaweed – proteins that can be used as ingredients in feed or food. The project is important because we face common and cross-border challenges – both employment, economic and not least environmental. If both students and companies strengthen cooperation and create common solutions, our region will be better equipped to retain and attract labour and deliver solutions that contribute to the common good. Educational institutions, business organisations and clusters will have the opportunity to develop and test new forms of cooperation and strengthen relations across the Fehmarnbelt. With Fehmarn Belt Innovation, we are preparing to become a more cohesive region when in a few years we will be connected even more closely through the fixed link between Rødby and Fehmarn. The project has the following objectives: 30 companies (about 15 from each country) implement well-designed innovation pathways together with partners and network partners 170 students participate during the 3 years in these innovation courses, which will take place both in one’s own country but also across the border. 20 solutions are being developed that can be applied... Within each of the three areas (building/food/maritime), a strategy/action plan for closer cross-border cooperation between clusters, organisations and educational institutions is being developed
