Guangxi Fenglin Forestry Development Co. Ltd. (Fenglin or the company) is one of the largest medium-density fiberboard (MDF) manufacturers in China. The company has manufactured MDF at its factory in Nanning, Guangxi Province, since 1995, and has expanded the plant several time since and now manufactures around 150,000 m3 annually at Nanning. A new production line of 50,000 m3 capacity was commissioned at Baise, Guangxi province late in 2003. In support of these manufacturing activities, Fenglin started to develop its own wood plantations in 1999; the first harvest is scheduled for 2005. It currently owns and manages over 6,000 ha of fast-growing, high-yielding eucalyptus and acacia plantations, which are supported by the company’s own clone tissue culturing and cutting nursery. Fenglin plans further expansion, and has sought IFC’s support for the necessary investment program which comprises construction of a new 200,000 m3/yr continuous-press MDF production line at Baise, construction of a laminated-flooring line and MDF printing line, also at Baise, and addition of some 14,000 ha to the plantation resources.
