Description

The project involved the cleanup and remediation of the former Fernald uranium processing facility in northwest Hamilton County, Ohio, transforming it from a Cold War-era nuclear weapons production site into a nature preserve with wetlands and environmental education facilities. The remediation was declared complete in October 2006, and the Fernald Preserve opened in 2007. The site now includes man-made wetlands that support salamander populations and other wildlife, alongside a disposal mound containing low-grade contaminated waste and groundwater extraction wells to flush out uranium plumes.
