Description
Description | The overall objective of the Fibre to Ireland’s Islands (FII) project is to provide subsea fibre telecommunications connectivity to 16 islands off the coast of Ireland. The objective of this Studies phase of the project will be to undertake preliminary engineering studies and the marine and landfall studies required for the later Works phase for installation of the subsea cables. Cable Route Studies, Environmental Studies, Archaeological Studies and other studies will be undertaken for each of the islands in advance of making applications for Maritime Usage Licences for marine surveys. Marine surveys will then be undertaken to gather the necessary information to plan the next phase of the project for installation of the subsea cables to provide fibre connectivity to the islands. This Studies phase of the project is a critical step for planning installation works which will ultimately provide reliable, high speed fibre broadband connectivity to the islands. Reliable highspeed broadband fibre connectivity will facilitate socio-economic development and allow the islands to fully avail of the opportunities presented by digital technologies in education, digital healthcare, e-commerce, digital culture and entertainment, remote working, and global communications. |
