India's vulnerability to climate change is already evident in high flood risks, extreme heat waves and increasing water shortages, with people in cities being particularly affected. Urban infrastructure must increasingly be planned and implemented according to climate-adapted standards in order to be sufficiently resilient to the risks and consequences of climate change and to be able to effectively reduce the effects of climate change. The Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development for Rishikesh project aims to increase the climate resilience of the northern Indian city of Rishikesh and its residents and visitors, while at the same time achieving a quantitative and qualitative improvement in urban supply structures with regard to the provision of basic municipal services. Increased climate resilience is to be achieved through investments in infrastructure measures that address increasing climate risks. Flood risks are mitigated by investments in blue and green infrastructure as well as flood and erosion protection, among other things. The effects of extreme heat can also be addressed by blue and green infrastructure and by an improved water supply. Increasing water shortages will be addressed through adequate wastewater disposal, recycling and measures to maintain supply networks. In addition, the project will contribute to climate protection and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through investments in climate-friendly transport infrastructure and green infrastructure. The project is designed as an open, criteria-based program in order to be able to respond to current and future needs as best and as flexibly as possible. Vulnerable population groups and in particular the needs of women will be given special consideration. The project sponsor is the Urban Development Department of the state of Uttarakhand.
