Description
Description | To ensure the conservation of biodiversity in Mexico, integrated approaches are required to guarantee long-term financing, effective management and improved networking between nature reserves. The FC projects FINANP I and FINANP II support the development of such an approach in selected nature reserves in Mexico and thus contribute to the conservation of the country's biodiversity. To achieve the objective, the projects will promote both long-term financial resources and the necessary infrastructure, equipment and personnel. Furthermore, the structures of the alternative protected areas (protected areas designated at the federal level and the areas voluntarily placed under nature conservation (ADVC)) and their networking with the federal NSGs will be strengthened. At the same time, the structure of CONANP will be supported by building up personnel capacities. The project will be implemented as an open program; individual components and measures to be financed will be defined in advance and the budgets for them will be allocated on an annual basis. The grant recipients and sponsors are the two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (FMCN). The project is divided into two sub-programs: FINANP I with IUCN (EUR 10 million) and FINANP II with FMCN (EUR 12 million). The implementation of the project is the responsibility of CONANP. Coordination between IUCN, FMCN and CONANP is ensured by means of bilateral contractual agreements (IUCN-CONANP and FMCN-CONANP respectively) and by a procedural manual agreed between CONANP, IUCN and FMCN. The target group is the population living in the federal protected areas, ADVC and protected areas designated at the state level, as well as the CONANP employees at the local level (almost 7,000 people). In addition, the project will indirectly benefit almost 5 million people who live near the protected areas and thus also benefit from ecosystem services and groups of people. |
