First commercial deployment of track-side ERTMS in Finland

The objective of the project is to deploy track-side European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on the comprehensive TEN-T network in Finland. This will be the first track section authorised for commercial use with ERTMS in Finland. The current class B train control system in Finland will reach the end of its technical lifespan in mid 2030s. The project will be implemented during the years 2024-2027 as a part of the global project, Digirail, which will deploy track-side ERTMS on all Finnish track sections during 2024-2040. The beneficiary, Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, together with its affiliated entity, Fintraffic Railway Ltd, will invest in deployment of standard European Train Control System (ETCS), Radio Communication, and interlocking on a single-track section of 135 km, Tampere-Kokemäki-Pori and further to the ports of Mäntyluoto/Tahkoluoto. The project will deploy at least ERTMS Baseline 3 / ETCS Level 2 equipment compliant with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability. Radio communication system will be an intermediate national radio solution compliant with current FRMCS specifications to be updated with latest specifications during global project. Commissioning permit of the equipment for commercial operation will be applied for from Traficom, the National Safety Authority. The infrastructure will be accessible for use by all operators on a non-discriminatory basis.
