Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Initiative

ongoing

This initiative focuses on reviving fishing terminals and supporting artisanal fish farmers nationwide in Nigeria to increase domestic fish production, reduce fish importation, and boost exports. The sector is central to food security, employment, and foreign exchange earnings. Local fish production increased from 1.1 million metric tonnes to 1.4 million metric tonnes in 2025, the first increase in a decade. Nigeria has also secured approval from the United States Government for its Turtle Excluder Device, enabling shrimp exports to access U.S. and European markets, thereby unlocking foreign exchange earnings and creating jobs along the value chain.
