Fitment of Vectron locomotives with ETCS Baseline 3

One of the major objectives of the EU’s transport policy is the deployment of ERTMS on the entire TEN-T Railway Core Network until 2030. In order to achieve this objective, the European Coordinator for ERTMS has identified the dual on-board strategy as the best transition deployment strategy. In this context, the CEF programme is supporting the on-board deployment of ETCS Baseline 3 (ETCS B3) in order to facilitate its market penetration. In line with the EU’s objective, Siemens Mobility’s Global Project aims at deploying ETCS B3 on the entire Vectron locomotive fleet. With around 1.500 units sold until mid-2022, the Vectron platform is among the most popular electric locomotives in the EU, equally suited for passenger and freight transport. Throughout the different project phases, ETCS B3 will be gradually deployed by retrofitting or upgrading the Vectron fleet already in operations, as well as by the fitment of new built locomotives. Due to the high number of vehicles already in operations and the increasing number of orders for new vehicles in recent years, the equipment of the Vectron locomotive fleet with ETCS B3 is likely to have a significant effect for the deployment of ERTMS on the TEN-T. The current project consists of the first phase of the ETCS B3 serial deployment for the Vectron fleet in the context of the Global Project. Between 2021 and 2024, 300 new built locomotives will be fitted and authorised for operations in a total of 15 EU Member States and 3 neighbouring countries. As a result, the project will allow to increase the number of railway vehicles equipped with ETCS B3 in operation on the TEN-T.
