Description

Description

In the absence of functioning public transport systems, India's increasing urbanization is accompanied by a rapidly growing volume of traffic. This represents an obstacle to development and puts a strain on the environment, climate and health. To counteract this trend, the German-Indian partnership for green and sustainable development is committed to expanding public transport in medium to large cities. The Suburban Railway System Bengaluru project is also supported in this context. The plan is to build a system similar to the S-Bahn, which consists of 4 lines with a total length of 149 kilometers and 58 stations, as well as the construction of two depots for parking and maintenance of the trains. The S-Bahn system provides for direct transfers to other public transport systems such as metros and buses as well as regional and long-distance trains. All stations are planned according to green building certification requirements. To facilitate access to the S-Bahn, footpaths and cycle paths will be expanded within a radius of around 500 meters around the stations. The S-Bahn system will transport around 1.4 million passengers a day in the future, thus triggering positive climate and health effects as well as increased economic productivity. Construction work on the S-Bahn will begin in 2024 and will last several years. The current estimated project costs are around 2 billion euros.
