KfW supports the development of energy-saving and climate-friendly transport systems in developing countries. It therefore signed a loan agreement for USD 200 million with the Latin American development bank Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF) on the sidelines of a World Bank meeting in Washington. The funds will be used exclusively to promote local public transport in various cities in Latin America. These include the capitals of Peru, Ecuador and Panama. While the existing Line 1 in Lima is being supplemented by Line 2, a completely new subway is being built in Quito over a length of around two dozen kilometers to give the metropolis with its historic old town some breathing room in the truest sense of the word. Panama City will also have its first metro line in the future, which will then be gradually expanded into a larger network. The program contributes to environmental and resource protection and to improving the living conditions of the population. In view of the high demand in the transport sector and its increased commitment as a regional development bank, CAF has a growing need for financing. Over the past few years, the CAF has established itself as one of the most important partners in the context of financial cooperation (FC) with Latin America. By using the federal government's guarantee framework, the CAF can be granted a promotional loan that, from today's perspective, meets the criteria for ODA eligibility.
