Floating AI Data Center on Retrofitted Ship

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Kinetics, the energy transition unit of Karpowership, are collaborating to develop the world's first integrated floating data center platform. This project involves retrofitting a 120-meter-long ship to host thousands of AI GPUs, cooled by direct seawater or river water systems. The power supply will be supported by powerships, solar farms, offshore wind, and onshore grids. The project aims to address digital infrastructure bottlenecks by providing mobile, flexible, and power-rich data center capacity, bypassing land constraints and permitting challenges. The initiative promises operations by 2027, contingent on successful feasibility studies and technical developments.
