Floating Data Centers Using Retrofitted Ships

Mitsui OSK Lines collaborates with Hitachi and Hitachi Systems to develop and operate floating data centers by converting second-hand ships. These floating data centers use seawater or river water for cooling high-performance servers, aiming to reduce power use and operational expenses. The project targets commercial operations starting from 2027 in Japan, Malaysia, and the United States. Mitsui OSK Lines manages vessel conversion planning, port coordination, and financing, while Hitachi companies handle data center design, IT infrastructure, and customer acquisition.
