Description | The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is proposing a highway safety improvement project along SC 171 (Folly Road), from Old Folly Beach Road to SC 700 (Maybank Highway). The project aims to address a high crash corridor identified through a study from 2018 to 2022, which recorded numerous vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes. Proposed safety improvements include high visibility crosswalks, compliant ADA ramps, CARTA bus stop relocations, and raised medians. The project involves multiple agencies including SCDOT, the Town of James Island, the City of Charleston, Charleston County, and regional councils and organizations. Public input is being sought through meetings and a comment period ending June 6, 2025. Construction plans are expected to start in Winter 2025 with an approximate 18-month construction beginning in late 2026, though the schedule may change as the project is still proposed. |
