Description
Description | The Central Tropical Eastern Pacific (Spanish: Pacífico Tropical Este Central, PTEC) covers an area of around 2 million km² and includes the exclusive economic zones, islands and coastal areas of four countries (Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama) and is considered one of the most biologically diverse and productive marine regions in the world. The FC regional project Fondo Pacífico - Marine Conservation aims to contribute to preserving the region's biological diversity and ensuring the sustainable use of its natural resources. For this purpose, a grant of EUR 10 million is to be made available to the sponsor, the regional environmental fund PACIFICO. The aim of the project is to contribute to the integrated conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in marine protected areas (MSA) and relevant connecting zones in the Central Tropical Eastern Pacific. The module intends to achieve the following results: The conditions for the conservation of important migratory species in MSGs and relevant connecting zones of the PTEC are improved. The fishery resources in MSG and relevant connection zones of the PTEC are used more sustainably and with the involvement of relevant interest groups. Regional integration for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in the PTEC is strengthened. The direct target group are the people who are actively involved in the implementation of the FC module. This is expected to include mainly the staff of the project executing agency PACIFICO, the staff of the protected areas supported, local communities and user groups, NGOs, representatives of science and politics, and the private sector. All residents of the coastal region of the PTEC whose livelihoods depend on the ecological functions of the PTEC benefit indirectly. |
