Description
Description | The aim of the FC measure is to contribute to ensuring the survival and livelihoods of Burundian refugees in Tanzania and to reducing acute undernourishment and malnutrition in particularly vulnerable groups (such as pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 5 years of age). The background to the current flow of refugees from Burundi is the ongoing political crisis, which has resulted in outbreaks of violence. Since April 2015, more than 225,000 people have fled Burundi, of whom over 130,000 have gone to Tanzania (as of February 2015). The majority of Burundian refugees come from food-insecure areas in Burundi and arrive in Tanzania with nothing. The restrictive Tanzanian legal situation for refugees (including restricted freedom of movement outside the camps and a ban on all economic activities) increases the refugees' dependence on food aid. Due to the particular urgency of the measures, the German contribution is being used to co-finance an ongoing WEP program. The Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation No. 200603 (PRRO), the WEP modality for support in emergency and transitional situations, has been running since July 2014 and is currently scheduled to run until June 2016. The FC contribution is intended to support measures to provide for newly arrived refugees in transit centers as well as the monthly distribution of basic foodstuffs in the refugee camps. In addition, targeted nutritional supplements are financed for groups particularly affected by malnutrition and its consequences. The total cost of the PRRO is estimated at around USD 68 million. The current funding gap is around USD 23.1 million (February 2016). The FC contribution amounts to EUR 14 million. |
