The project will invest in the following key activities: (i) provision of irrigation services, through the rehabilitation/upgrading of existing irrigation areas, as well as development of new irrigated areas; and (ii) technical and institutional measures for strengthening irrigation governance and management. This includes: (i) rehabilitation and upgrading in 27 existing irrigation systems including irrigation and drainage infrastructures, with an estimated total area of 88,042 hectares; and (ii) adding new irrigation area of approx. 10,086 hectares in 5 existing irrigation schemes, through construction of irrigation and drainage infrastructure.Accordingly, the project will have three components: (1) Irrigation Rehabilitation, Upgrading, and Development: This component will finance detailed design, rehabilitation, upgrading, and development of irrigation, drainage, and O&M infrastructures and facilities for approximately 98,128 ha of irrigated land. (2) Technical and Institutional Strengthening. This component will support selected interventions with the aim of enhancing sustainability and productivity of investments across the broader water systems. It will strengthen technical and institutional capacities in irrigation and agriculture, by improving the accountability and performance of irrigation service delivery.(3) Project Management: This component will support project management and implementation The project will leverage the broader regional MPA of which it is a part, and will strengthen capacities through regional exchange and learning across all components.
