Description
Description | The Amazon rainforest is of global importance for the climate and the preservation of biodiversity. However, increasing deforestation threatens this unique ecosystem and, in addition to the irreversible loss of biodiversity, leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn are responsible for increasing global warming. The project promotes efficient deforestation control, thereby protecting the rainforest from deforestation and forest fires in the long term. The aim of the project is to reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon region. In this way, the project contributes to protecting the global climate (SGD 13) and preserving biodiversity (SDG 15). The project is part of the Floresta em Pé program, which provides results-based financing for tropical forest protection at the federal level. Grants of up to EUR 21 million will be paid out in line with the REDD+ mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for emission reductions from avoided deforestation. For a transitional period, payments can be made in exchange for measurable successes in forest protection policy. In addition to deforestation control, the funds paid out also promote sustainable, forest-based value chains at the local level (benefit sharing). In this way, the funds are reinvested in improving the living conditions of the population groups living in and from the forest. The project is sponsored by the non-profit foundation FAS (Fundação Amazônia Sustentável) based in Manaus (Brazil), which is implementing the project in cooperation with the environmental authorities in the states of Amazonas and Pará. The target groups that benefit are primarily indigenous peoples, traditional communities, small farmers and agricultural, forestry and livestock companies that use the forest and its natural resources sustainably. Women and young people are particularly supported. |
