The Project for the Training of Basic Education Teachers is designed to create two General Education Pedagogical Institutes (IPEGs) in Niono and Kangaba. It is the result of Mali's education policy aimed, over the current decade, at expanding and improving basic education (basic education and literacy). The two new institutes are expected to increase the production capacity of the country's IPEGs, whose limited number does not help meet national teacher needs. The new structures to be created should make it possible to produce, each year from 1988 onwards, 360 new qualified teachers capable of assuming the responsibilities of animators in rural areas. The project has two main components, namely: (I) development of teacher training structures, which includes (i) the creation of a Pedagogical Institute of General Education in Kangaba (construction, furniture and equipment) and (ii) the creation of a Pedagogical Institute of General Education in Niono (construction, furniture and equipment) and (II) support for the Education Project Office, including (iii) technical assistance and BPE operation (site supervisors, current expenditure).
