In August 2012, the Brazilian companies Foz do Brasil, a subsidiary of Odebrecht Group, was awarded the 30-year concession contract to expand, rehabilitate and operate the sewerage facilities of the municipality of Macae located at the state of Rio de Janeiro. The sponsor also bid for operating the water distribution system of this city, which has a population of 195,000. Foz do Brasil was awarded the contract by offering the best technical and economic package. No additional information was available on the other bidders that took part in the bidding process. The contract was signed in November 2012, and the private sponsor took over the operations of the sewerage services in January 2013. The special purpose company Foz de Macae S.A. was set to lead the project. The company committed to invest US$ 237.9 million (BRL 560 million) in the first five years of the project. The sponsor agreed to add 224 km in collection ducts, besides expanding and maintaining the city's sewerage treatment plants. The PPP contract envisaged a public funding of US$ 367.7 million (BRL 865.2 million).
