Framing the Next Gen TMS

This project is exploring the current practices, new methods, emerging technologies, and approaches to improve the active management and operation of a Traffic Management System (TMS). As agencies plan to implement or explore improving a TMS, they are facing a number of challenges (such as performance, costs for expanding system coverage, costs for enhancing services supported, costs for operating and maintaining the system, and demands on staff resources and their capabilities to operate and maintain the system). This project is examining the basic functions of TMSs, operational strategies supported; identifying how their current system compares to others, range of capabilities existing in practice, motivation for agencies making investments in TMS functions or capabilities, challenges, lessons learned from other agencies; and helping agencies identify potential areas of improvement for their systems.
