The project involves the costly, high-profile rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland. Initially, Kiewit was hired to design and construct the new bridge under a progressive design-build contract. However, due to Kiewit's high cost estimates, the state of Maryland has decided to seek a new builder on the open market, which may delay the project's completion past 2030. The new contractor will use Kiewit's nearly complete designs. The project cost estimate was increased to between $4.3 and $5.2 billion, with Kiewit's cost projection exceeding this range. Kiewit will complete contracted work through at least the end of December and will receive over $700 million for design and early construction work.
