The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed after being struck by the container ship Dali on March 26, 2024, resulting in six fatalities among construction workers. The state of Maryland has initiated a major transportation project to rebuild the bridge 260 feet east of the old one. Preliminary work includes demolition of remaining structures, foundation piling, and construction of wooden trestles to facilitate access. The project cost has escalated from under $2 billion to more than double, with an expected completion date by the end of 2030.
