Description

Following the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024, Maryland selected engineering firm Kiewit to design and construct a replacement. The new cable-stayed bridge will maintain four lanes, increase vertical clearance from 185 feet to 230 feet, extend the span between primary support piers from 1,209 feet to 1,600 feet, and have a total length of 2 miles. The bridge is engineered for a minimum 100-year lifespan, incorporating modern materials and advanced pier protection technologies to accommodate larger cargo vessels. The project is federally funded with a $73 million initial contract awarded for design and site preparation, aiming for completion in 2028.
