Franconia-Springfield Bypass Project

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority is planning to carry out the Franconia-Springfield Bypass Project. It entails building a rail bridge just south of the Franconia-Springfield station that will allow passenger trains to cross over to serve stations on the west side of the rail corridor and will reduce congestion for freight and passenger trains on the remaining two rail tracks. Project construction includes a single track on the bypass bridge with accommodations for a future second track. The project will allow all trains to move more safely through the rail corridor, increase the capacity for passenger service and improve the reliability of both passenger and freight service.
