For purposes of this project, it is referred to as Muir Woods Road. Muir Woods Road is the only road providing access to the Muir Woods National Monument from the south. It also provides access to the Mount Tamalpais State Park, which is managed by California Department of Parks and Recreation. A joint Environmental Assessment and Initial Study is being prepared to study proposed improvements to the roadway. The proposed project will improve 2.4 miles of roadway beginning near the entrance to Muir Woods National Monument and ending at the intersection with State Highway 1 (see map). The project will also improve drainage, replace and realign the substandard bridge over Redwood Creek, stabilize road embankments in areas of slope failure, and improve striping and signage.
