Description | The United States is replacing a 150-year-old railway tunnel in Baltimore, known as the Baltimore & Potomac tunnel, with a new tunnel called the Frederick Douglass Tunnel. The project spans 16 km and includes building two parallel high-capacity tubes for electric passenger trains, replacement of bridges, a new MARC station, modernization of safety systems, and road improvements. The new tunnel will allow trains to travel up to 160 km/h, significantly faster than the current tunnel. Construction is ongoing alongside the old tunnel without stopping train operations, with an estimated completion in 2035. |
