Description
Description | This project aims to mitigate the risk of flooding (pluvial & fluvial), increase community resilience, and public safety in a vulnerable area of the City of Fredericton experiencing surcharging & flooding issues. The following sub-projects are key aspects of projects to improve the resiliency to flooding on the Northside of Fredericton: The Saint Mary’s Street Project (From the St. John River to 320 St. Mary’s Street) will replace and upgrade end-of-life core infrastructure while providing adaptation benefits to high intensity rainfall events through realignment and upsizing of infrastructure. Currently, water flows down St. Mary’s Street with minor flows diverting runoff to the side of the street while major flows continue through to Union Street. The Crocker Street Project extends from the Nashwaak River through the Canada Street intersection up to the future extension of Pickard Street. The aim is to upgrade and replace end-of-life core infrastructure, which will provide adaptation benefits to high intensity rainfall events. Currently, these types of events cause the existing sewer system to be surcharged. The Nashwaaksis Outfall / Hillcourt Project will replace sections of storm sewer and sanitary sewer between Main Street and Hillcourt Drive. A portion of the Northside Hill area (Nashwaaksis) drains through a series of sewer system down to the Nashwaaksis Stream. During high intensity rainfalls, this storm sewer can become surcharged which has caused inundation flooding that has impacted residential and commercial properties. This project will result in improvements to multiply City owned assets that will work together to create safe flow routes for water during heavy downpours and river floods, mitigating the risk of pluvial and fluvial flooding, increasing community resilience, and safeguarding water and soil quality. |
