Description

Description

Following the success of its two most recent productions – Sebastian Meise’s GREAT FREEDOM (Oscar Shortlisted) and Stefan Ruzowitzky’s HINTERLAND (Locarno Piazza Grande Award) – FreibeuterFilm wants to further strengthen and expand its position in the European arthouse cinema market with a strong slate emphasizing the company’s international orientation. The slate comprises five director-driven films, all planned as international co-productions. They are extremely diverse in terms of themes/genre and financial scope/budget, while they have in common the capacity to reach new audiences and territories. These co-productions enable us to continue our cooperation with partners from Germany, Luxemburg and France while establishing new partnerships with companies from Spain, Belgium, Lithuania, Ukraine and Hungary as well as with non-European territories. One focus of the slate is developing projects with emerging female directors: three out of the five films are being developed by women filmmakers. CALM by Sara Fattahi is an epic drama about memory and the abstract longing for the protagonist’s hometown, Damascus. LIGHTING AND FIREFLIES by Luz Olivares Capelle is an arthouse crime story that delves deep into the buried history of Argentina. RADIOACTIVE (WT) by Myroslav Schlaboshpytskiy is a visually stunning scientific arthouse horror piece set in a dystopian wasteland in Ukraine. WHO IS AFRAID OF GOD by Rosa Friedrich is a flashy, satirical comedy about a teenage girl who believes neither in God nor in herself. SEMMELWEIS by Markus Schleinzer is a historical drama about the medical pioneer Dr. Semmelweis. We are convinced that the development and production of these projects will allow us to continue our presence at major festivals; these innovative films will be released in cinemas around the world. This slate is a valuable opportunity to develop and produce higher budget films with international perspective.
