Description

Description

During the 2026 heatwave in Europe, French nuclear reactors, which supply about 70% of France's electricity, had to reduce output due to river water temperature regulations. The reactors depend on river water for cooling, and environmental regulations limit the temperature of discharged water to protect ecosystems. Elevated river temperatures forced output reductions of up to 6.4 GW, affecting up to 41 GW of capacity during peak heat periods, causing France to become a net electricity importer.
