The challenge of globalisation caused a worldwide structural transformation. Global processes had lead to the shifting from an industrial to service oriented society. Hence, deindustrialisation had a great impact on districts with industrial sites and thus were catalyst for the need of the revitalisation of those sites. SECOND CHANCE undertakes the task to foster the regeneration of five brownfield sites in Nuremberg, Venice, Krakow, Ljubljana and Leipzig through the integration & promotion of cultural activities. The development of the post-industrial sites through economic activities is very difficult as those buildings are mostly oversized and the specific constitution of those objects and the distance to the city centre complicate economic developments even more. Therefore, the only chance for further use is the revitalisation through cultural activities. Flexibility of the utilisation of the available resources and a permanent request of premises for cultural presentation meet the demands of artists. Furthermore, culture became an important economic sector and hence, is a very attractive form of utilisation. Aim of SECOND CHANCE is the maintenance of the five historic monuments of the target cities with cultural revitalisation measures to improve their sustainability. Moreover, the transfer of innovative revitalisation strategies and concepts into relevant policies will upgrade the brownfield sites to a key cultural linchpin of the cities district.
