Description
Description | The LIFE Balkan GriffON project aims to establish viable populations of Griffon Vultures in continental Greece and North Macedonia and reinforce the existing matapopulation of the Balkan Peninsula by improving their breeding and survival conditions through implementation of conservation actions that will significantly reduce the impact of the most important threats for the species in the region (wildlife poisoning and food scarcity), facilitating connection to other populations of Griffon Vultures in the Balkan Peninsula and by reintroduction/restocking of this species to its former breeding areas. As an added value, conservation actions implemented in this project aiming to address the most importnant threats for Griffon Vultures, will directly benefit other vulture and raptor species in the project area, namely Egyptian Vulture, Cinereous Vulture, Eastern Imperial Eagle and Lesser Kestrel. The LIFE Balkan GriffON project will focus its conservation actions towards reducing the mortality of Griffon Vultures, and other vulture species, caused by wildlife poisoning and improving the conditions for food availabilty for these scavengers. By tackling these most important threats for their survival, the current breeding population in mainland Greece and North Macedonia will continue to survive and increase in number, which is an important first step for the species to re-colonize their historical breeding ranges in the project countries and better connect to other populations of Griffon Vultures in the Balkan Peninsula. |
