Europe has a long history of destructive earthquakes, and seismic risk can severely affect our modem society, as recently shown by the 2009 L'Aquila and 2016 Central Italy events. Therefore, it is important that on the broader EU level we understand the earthquake risks and try to mitigate them by effectively preparing and responding when earthquakes occur. By preparing and conducting table-top and full-scale exercises, workshops and designing deliverables with good practices and recommendations available to all Union Civil Protection Mechanism participating states and partners, this project aims to increase the preparedness and response capacities of the broad civil protection system on national, regional, EU and international level for the case of major earthquake and its subsequent consequences in central Slovenia. Main objectives of the project are to test the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) procedures and international response in case of a major earthquake within EU, test integration of EU modules, multinational modules, other response capacities and EUCPT into national response, test and improve Host Nation Support (HNS) Guidelines and related procedures also by developing HNS training outline, test and improve response plans related to providing short-term and medium-term sheltering and test cross-border, national, regional and local response plans in case of a major earthquake. Main project events will include table-top and full-scale exercises with earthquake scenario organized in central Slovenia in 2020 where Austria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey will participate with their experts and rescue units. In addition to exercises, project will include two Workshops, first one with the topic on training Host Nation Support and second one on the topic of organizing mass shelters after an earthquake.
