Description
Description | The project includes important upgrades to improve the reliability and operation of the existing water treatment system by refurbishing the existing water filtration unit, installing a second filtration unit for backup and redundancy, and improving humidity control in the existing filtration building. The Village relies on a surface water supply as their municipal water supply source and, as a result, operates a filtration system to remove turbidity and meet water quality guidelines. The existing water filtration unit was installed and brought on-line in 2008; having been in service for fifteen years, the filtration system has reached a point where it requires upgrade work. Proposed upgrades to the existing equipment include refurbishment of the existing unit to extend its overall life and, installation of equipment to better control humidity in the existing building, thus reducing the potential for condensation and related corrosion. Operating the water system with only one filtration unit poses a significant risk for the Village - With no backup, the Village would not be able to supply potable water to its residents, many of whom are seniors, including a number who reside in Forestdale Nursing Home (a long-term care facility). As per Atlantic Canada Water Supply Guidelines (Draft, 2020) state: A minimum of two (2) filtration units should be provided. The filters should be designed to enable the facility to operate with one filter out of service provided that provincial health related water quality requirements are met while one filter is out of service. To meet this recommended requirement and improve reliability of the Village’s water treatment system, it is necessary to install a second water filtration unit. This will provide the necessary redundancy and create a much more robust treatment system so that the Village is not left in a situation where water cannot be treated and supplied to its residents. |
