Description

The Future Combat Air System (SCAF) was a European defense aerospace program launched in 2017 by France and Germany, later joined by Spain. It aimed to develop a next-generation fighter jet system including accompanying drones, advanced sensors, electronic warfare capabilities, and a digital battlefield network architecture. The program was intended to symbolize European strategic autonomy in defense. However, after years of tensions and billions of euros spent on preliminary studies, the project was abandoned in 2026 due to fundamental differences among partners and governance issues.
