Future Learning: EU Integration and Digital Modernization in the Age of Climate Change Policy

The proposed Jean Monnet Teacher Training project – Future Learning: EU Integration and Digital Modernization in the Age of Climate Change Policy – will examine the climate change policy of the EU, including G20 aspects, digitalization and digital taxation perspectives in the EU, integration dynamics (including the post-Brexit change in the relative power of individual member states as measured e.g. by the Banzhaf index), as well as questions of EU trade policy and investment protection policy (e.g. recent treaty with China; an area where the EU has competence since the Lisbon Treaty). Hence, critical informational and knowledge gaps of teachers in Gymnasiums (second-level schools) and Europa Schulen (Europe Schools) in Germany are closed, namely in critical fields where teaching materials are often unavailable and where the current interest of students is strong. Teachers learn about EU institutional developments plus international trade and foreign direct investment dynamics as well as major policy initiatives which contribute to climate protection, growth, social cohesion and macroeconomic stability in Europe and beyond. Aspects of economic/political power and international interdependence – e.g. in the context of climate policy or cooperation with the G20 – will also be emphasized. The project will employ digital platforms, innovative didactic approaches, workshops etc. whereby online, in person and hybrid formats will be used; participants will obtain free handbooks and access to other materials – for workshops, contributions to travel etc. will be made. The project will close existing knowledge gaps and develop tools for teachers in an efficient, structured and innovative way – in German and English. Handbooks will be made available, with content developed on the basis of feedback from teachers involved in project. Applicant has EU-related experience in teaching training from a previous Jean Monnet Project (2011; Learning EU at Schools).
